La Roche Enchantée: sound and light synchronization

Since July 2024, Make it Event and FAERYA CONCEPT have created “La Roche Enchantée”, a unique night-time show at La Roque Saint Christophe in the Périgord Noir. This wandering tour immerses visitors in a sound-and-light narrative, where the 300-metre troglodytic cliff is illuminated by projected frescoes and sound effects. Guided by a luminous trail, spectators relive the memories of fresco artist Guilhem, who recounts his visit to this historic site in the year 1600.

Challenge

Setting up this immersive show posed a number of challenges:

Projections and sound: We had to enhance the cliff face and project frescoes onto this rocky surface, while ensuring seamless sound immersion in a natural space.
Multisensory management: Offer a complete experience by combining image, sound and light in a complex outdoor environment.
Technical installation: More than 8,000 holes had to be drilled in the rock to install the equipment, taking care to preserve the aesthetics and safety of the historic site.

Solution

To meet these challenges, Waves System proposed the use of the EVP380, an all-in-one media player designed to simultaneously manage video projection, sound, and DMX lighting. This device made it possible to :

Project images and frescoes directly onto the cliff, enhancing the monument and recreating the visual universe of fresco artist Guilhem.
Create an immersive sound and light environment, thanks to the simultaneous management of video projectors and sound. Visitors are immersed in a magical experience.
Control the entire show remotely, adjusting effects in real time. The perfect synchronization of all the EVP380s distributed along the show route was achieved via an easy-to-use UDP network protocol.

Results

Total immersion: The EVP380 succeeded in creating an intimate, fairytale atmosphere, where the cliff at La Roque Saint Christophe comes to life, captivating visitors with its frescoes and play of light.
A technical and artistic success: The integrated system made it possible to manage all the technical aspects of the show (sound, lighting, projection) smoothly and efficiently, while respecting the integrity of the natural site.
A new tourist attraction: The show helped boost the appeal of La Roque Saint Christophe by offering a unique immersive experience, rooted in history and technology. The show was extended at the end of the summer, and attendance exceeded forecasts.
